Law enforcement in Sacramento are examining a violent incident that broke out on April 18 2026 at Howe Community Park in the Arden-Arcade area just as Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were dispersing a large unauthorized gathering of several hundred people.
Before the Gunfire
Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were first called to the park at approximately 6:30 PM on April 18 after receiving reports of subjects reportedly carrying hidden weapons. Not long after, a second caller reported mentioning a potential altercation taking place near the park.
Aerial units scanned the area from the air but was unable to locate the reported altercation. However, it was evident that an enormous crowd had congregated at Howe Park without permission.
The Dispersal and Shooting
Officers began the process of clearing the park by surrounding the park and making announcements ordering the crowd to leave immediately. About 15 minutes were allotted for the crowd to leave.
At the height of the dispersal effort that an estimated 20 to 25 shots were discharged. The shots sent hundreds fleeing. Deputies quickly moved to identifying shooting victims.
The Shooting Victims
By the time the scene was secured, four individuals were found to have been shot. The shooting victims — made up of one woman and three men each reported to be in their 20s at the time of the incident — were airlifted or driven to hospitals in the Sacramento area. Emergency physicians stated that two had critical injury classifications, one victim's injuries were classified as moderate, and one person's injuries were considered minor. In a positive development, all four victims survived and were stable.
Sacramento Metro Fire assisted at the location and helped care for those with gunshot wounds prior to hospital transport.
Physical Evidence
The primary shooting scene was determined to have Howe Park shooting Sacramento happened on Cottage Way adjacent to the Home Depot located at the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Investigators located more spent casings along Cottage Way. Projectile impacts were discovered in the iron fence adjacent to the nearby Home Depot. These findings suggested that at least one shooter had been aiming south from Cottage Way aimed at the Home Depot store. The store itself was secured under a brief lockdown during the incident. Crime scene technicians and detectives kept processing evidence well into the night.
Arrests Made
Details gathered over scanner radio traffic showed that a Kia was intercepted in nearby Solano County. Four occupants were stopped and detained. Sheriff's units were sent to retrieve the detainees to pick up those detained for processing in Sacramento County. Footage analyzed by investigators showed that two shooters had been involved.
